Graflex Camera Brochure

Graflex Camera Brochure

2003

Client: self
Assignment: I owned this camera in 2003, but did not have any documentation. I decided it would be fun to design my own brochure, using photos I toook of the camera, as well as photos taken with another medium-format camera (I never bought film for the Graflex, so couldn't take photos with it). I decided on a tri-fold format with a reveal that transitioned from a line drawing into a photo of the camera. I chose to use mainly grayscale imagery to maintain a "vintage" look and feel.

Glamour Makeup Kits

2009

Client: Cinema Secrets, Inc.
Assignment: Cinema Secrets has sold Halloween makeup kits for those who wanted to be vampires, devils, and other scary creatures. I was part of a team who came up with a glamour makeup kit for women who want to have easy-to-apply makeup for more glamourous roles, such as pin-ups, flappers, and other sexy characters. There were six themes chosen and appropriate makeup components sourced. I designed a nice box with a window to showcase the product. We had a formal photo shoot where we got imagery of women wearing the makeup, and we got no farther before the project was scrapped due to a change of direction for the company. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any production pieces, so all I have is the artwork and some mockups.

California State Quarter Design

California State Quarter Design

2002

Client: Self, Treasury Dept. & State of California (as part of a contest)
Assignment: While not truely package design, this project seems best to be placed here. The Treasury Dept. allowed each state to design it's own quarter, and the State of California decided to have a contest for California residents to submit designs. There were over 8.000 entries submitted, and my design was among 23 semi-finalists. For some reason, the final chosen design was not one of the contest submissions. My design was based on the Goldent Gate Bridge, arguably the most well-known California landmark. I felt this was the perfect subject since it spans the entry to the San Francisco Bay, where immigrants have historically entered the United States through California, and is essentially the West Coast equivalent of the Statue of Liberty as being the first landmark seen by immigrants.

Woochie® Packaging Redesign

2008

Client: Cinema Secrets, Inc.
Assignment: Cinema Secrets had used the same boring blue blister cards for their Woochie product for many years. The images on the packaging was barely over one inch in size, which was very similar to the way the rest of the Halloween industry did things. The Woochie product is a plain latex appliance, which is not much to look at in the packaging; it's the photo of the completed makeup that's important. I felt that Cinema Secrets needed to make a bigger impact in order to keep ahead of the approaching competition by doing something "outside the box." I designed a clamshell, instead of a blister card, which placed the latex appliance behind a full-size insert with an image that filled the entire package. I maintained the same footprint to allow the planograms to remain the same. The rest of the industry took notice and we got a lot of praise for the change. The following year our biggest competitor made the same changes to their packaging, and it's becoming the new standard. I did choose the leave the Woochie Accessory products on blister cards, but reduced the size by half in order to have more product in the planograms. This still allowed me to enlarge the imagery to eight times the area as before.

Woochie® Makeup Kits

2008

Client: Cinema Secrets, Inc.
Assignment: Unlike the Woochie blister cards, the Cinema Secrets Makeup Kits did have large imagery on the old packaging, but the old purple and red coloration did not match the new Woochie clamsheel artwork. I redesigned the two sizes and five variations of kits using the same black and orange I used for the Woochie packaging. This coloration was appropriate for Halloween products and also makes a big impact when the bright makeup photos are placed on a rich black background.

Cinema Secrets Bottle Artwork Redesign

2008

Client: Cinema Secrets, Inc.
Assignment: Along with the packaging for Cinema Secrets, I also redesigned the boring black and white (with an occasional splash of red) labels on the Halloween bottled products. I maintained a black background for most of hte labels, only keeping a white background for those items also sold in the Cosmetics Division.

Cinema Secrets Costume Insert

Cinema Secrets Costume Insert

2008

Client: Cinema Secrets, Inc.
Assignment: Cinema Secrets had been using an insert for their Halloween costumes with a red theatrical curtain background. The bright red often distrcted from the colorful fabrics of the costume photograph, so I felt we needed to tone down the background, while maintaining an elegant look and feel. I chose a yellow parchment color and texture, which made the costume imagery realy stand out. I changed the title and costume name using the custom font I created based on the company logo.

Creepeez Costume Insert

Creepeez Costume Insert

2007

Client: Cinema Secrets, Inc.
Assignment: This costume insert is for a costume and mask kit with a darker theme than the standard Cinema Secrets costumes. I chose a black background with green effects on the logo and title. This coloration was one I had been playing with for future use on a line of Halloween FX "Bodily Fluid" products, which I wanted to incorporate into some of hte maks and costume kits. Unfortunately the bodily fluid products were never fully developed, leaving only the mask/costume kits usinf this coloration.
